Last Days of Summer

Less than two weeks until kindergarten starts! Yesterday, Josiah and I went to a "new parent and student orientation" at his elementary school. We listened to the principal speak and went on a nice little tour of the school...saw the gym, the kindergarten classrooms, the nurse's office, the cafeteria and the playground. Josiah didn't enjoy the principal's speech very much, but I think he was very interested in the tour. I heard him telling Annika this morning about the nurse's office. I hope he never has to actually visit it!

His first day is September 8th and I'm still trying to decide if I want to accompany him and Hans up to the school. I will be picking him up at 2:30, but Hans has offered to take him over there and then continue on to his office, which will be very helpful here in a few weeks when I'm even more sleep-deprived than I am right now! I can't have myself together by 7:45, but I should be able to get out of my pajamas and get a newborn and a 3-1/2 year old ready to go by 2:30. Right? I've done this before...

Anyway, he is excited. Someone commented that it's good that he's excited rather than afraid or clingy. That would make it difficult. We've been talking a lot at home about what to expect at school. I posted a copy of the "school rules" on the fridge and we've been talking about how to behave and what not to do during his day.

A couple of days ago during snack time, I made a comment about how we only had a few more days of having Josiah home with us all day long and to my complete amazement, I watched as Annika's face turned red, crumpled and she burst into dramatic tears. She declared: "I'm going to MISS Jo-Jo!". Wahhhhhhhhh!

And here I thought they weren't that attached to each other...!

Not much else is new since we have been sticking close to home. The weather has cooled off, which is nice, though it is still very humid. We have spent a great deal of time outside in the kiddie pool and on the playground or inside playing. I have been keeping busy selling off what remains of Annika's clothes--I'm just about done now, just a couple of sets left to list. I have one great customer who keeps coming by to take lots off my hands. I may just have to develop a symbiotic relationship with her and send her Annika's outgrown things every season!

I got out all the baby clothes yesterday and washed them all. Cleared out a dresser drawer or two for them. A couple of people have asked if we need anything...I think I'm pretty much set. There is one thing new that we're going to try this time around: cloth diapers. I know, I know, you're all going "Huh???!" I will tell you right now it's not because I'm some environmentalist. I was terrified to even bring the subject up to Hans for fear he'd start off on one of his speeches. Turns out he was only opposed to cloth diapers from a cleaning standpoint...how does one deal with dirty diapers? Well, I explained to him that I had done some research and found these great Bum Genius diapers that grow with the baby and that one can buy flushable soft paper liners for these diapers, making cleanups a snap. I have bought just three of the diapers so far, as a trial...I'm still going to use disposables at night and in the car or on errands. I just want to see if the cloths work out. They are more expensive upfront, but if they work, they would save a ton of money. We'll see. I may mess with them once and decide that I hate them and embrace my Pampers once again!

I wish there was more news to share, but that is about it folks!

I have a friend that uses cloth diapers and she loves them. I wondered about the mess with cleaning them and she showed me the liners, which seems like they will make things much simpler. She also showed me the adorable little velcro patterned diapers that are so cute! I was picturing the white ones that you use as burp rags. I agree with you-you will definitely save a lot of money going with cloth diapers. Let us know how it goes!

It's great to hear that Joe is excited about school. It will be a change for both he and Annie, but a good change!

It's also hard for me to believe Josiah will be starting kindergarten this fall. Wasn't he just crawling a year ago?! How time flies.

I'm glad it has cooled off for you and hope you are getting the rest you need.

It must have been fun putting all of the clean baby clothes in the drawers. What did Annika think of them?

And if you don't like the cloth diapers, they will make great dust rags. :)

Big, big events coming up for you, Rach!

If they don't get this budget thing worked out you could be there permanently? Daughter, I sure do not envy your workload at the present time. I still have the picture from San Diego with Joe reading a book and Hans on the bed beside him also with a book. Readin is so important. It seems as if your time as a teacher for your siblings is paying off for your own children.
