Final Roster Results

...Mrs. Beckham will be Josiah's very first teacher! I wonder if he'll remember her, how much she will influence his love of school and learning, even though they will only spend about four months together. Hans and I were recalling our teachers tonight. I remember my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Huisentruit, but Hans couldn't recall his (maybe Donna remembers?), but we both recalled every one from first grade to fifth or sixth grade, when we stopped having homeroom.

Mrs. Beckham called us this evening to introduce herself and set up a time to do a little home visit to meet Josiah one-on-one. She's going to come over on Monday afternoon and meet him, check out his room and get to know what he's interested in. Hmmm, do you think Josiah will say anything about THOMAS?!

(Speaking of Thomas, I do have to mention that last night before bedtime, Josiah decided that we would be celebrating "Sodor Day" today and soon he and Annika were hard at work producing banners, wrapping "presents" for the trains...they even made up a little song for the celebration! All in complete harmony. I need to take a picture of the banner.)

Oh, and Josiah will be in the integrated kindergarten through second grade classroom...kindergarten, first grade and second grade all in one room. We're excited to see how he fares in a non-traditional sort of classroom. I know that there are certain topics that he is advanced in, such as reading, vocabulary, writing, so I think it's a great fit for him to be able to maybe work with the first or second graders in those areas. We haven't done very much work on math, probably my fault since I fear math like I fear cobras and tarantulas, so I'll be interested to see where he fits in in that area.

Any which way, we are all getting more and more excited for August 8th!

That Mrs. Beckham is coming for a home visit sounds very caring to me! I'm happy that he's in that classroom. I think it'll be a good fit.
Sodor Day? There must be a Hallmark card for that, right? Hope Sodor had a good day!

I'm so glad he is going to be in a mixed grade class. I had that for 4th ,5th & 6th, and I thought it was great. Newer students learn the ropes from the older students, and even though Joe won't get the opportunity, older kids get to teach the younger kids and feel more confident returning to school in the fall.

When we do home visits we have to go in pairs and bring a cell phone.

I couldn't comment on your other post. Make sure you go to the Jewish Mother when you get to Virginia Beach/Norfolk. YUMMY!

Wow! A home visit - I've never heard of that. I'm impressed. If I recall, we had one or two teachers from Sumner School over to our house once for dinner.

I think Hans's first teacher had blond hair, but at this time I can't recall her name.

I hope Josiah has a rich experience in school.

I had not one, but *two* sets of mixed grades at (Thurston Howell III voice) Saint Paul Academy, and I turned out fine...I'm pretty sure. I even remember all my teachers' names, which is a little frightening, now that I think about it.

He'll be fine, I am certain; if teachers can put up with a kid who likes ships and planes *whistling innocently*, they can deal with one who likes trains.

It kind of sounds like the one room school houses that I attended for the first 6 years of schooling ( no kindergarten in my day). We had eight grades one year. I think that I can recall my first 6 teachers. After I learned to read I spent a lot of time reading encyclopedias, probably the source of my useless trivia skills. My word, Sodor Day, where does he come up with his ideas? What a kid!
