Tall Ships & Wrapping Up Bermuda
Let's travel back in time....back to the end of June...
The Tall Ships Festival was in full force here in Newport. We're nice and close to downtown, so we were able to put the kids in the buggy and stroll out to take a look. I've forgotten the statistics already, such as how many ships were there and which countries were represented. All that I know is that they were lovely to look at, there were foreign sailors all over Newport and there were about 1,000,002 extra tourists in town over the five days of the festival. Neither Hans nor I managed to tour any of the ships, but we got close enough to get some good looks and some good pictures, so enjoy.
As part of the Tall Ships Festival, Naval Station Newport had a band concert and fireworks on the lawn of the War College on the 29th. We figured this was a good time to introduce Josiah and Annika to fireworks and celebrate Independence Day a bit early, since we'd be in Bermuda on the 4th. We walked down to the base with our wonderful neighbors, Jeff and Laura, and found a great place to sit. It took a very, very, very long time for full darkness to fall that night, but the band was good and the view of the Pell Bridge as the sun set was marvelous. It would have been perfect if Josiah and Annika had behaved themselves, but they kept us up and running as they made a dash for the seawall or ran onto other people's blankets. Add to their general naughtiness (or perhaps high spirits?) the fact that as the night wore on, they were farther and farther from their normal bedtime. Being tired makes for a very special brand of naughtiness. At last the fireworks started...Annika was a little afraid at first, but quickly got into the spirit and Josiah was enthralled.
OK, travel back to today.
Wrapping up Bermuda, here's a few more pictures of us at tea and us at the beach on Thursday. Yes, that's me in my swimsuit. I'm feeling brave, so I'll post it! Gen, thanks for some really cute swimsuits...I have to get even braver to put the red one on. Maybe next time I'm in Bermuda! Anyway, we had a nice time at the beach, despite the fact that we had to wait a half-hour for beach towels (provided by the hotel) and we both got a little sunburn on our legs.
There are a couple of pictures of us taking our tea on Friday and one or two of Par-La-Ville Park in Hamilton. Birds in the birdbath. It made me think of my Dad's excellent old photo of the cat in the birdbath, remember that one Dad?
Hopefully, my next post won't be so looooonggg!!! Sorry. I do get carried away!
