Bermuda #2

Bermuda, day #2. My dogs are tired tonight...

First, we slept in. Late. Thank heavens for blackout shades. I have promised Hans that we will get blackout shades in our next home. We slept until 8:30. Bliss.

Next, we walked through Hamilton to see Fort Hamilton. Someone has a slight obsession with old forts (hint: not me, though I do enjoy them to some extent). It was a bit of a climb up there, but definitely worth it. We will post pictures, hopefully soon. Took a walk through the dry moat, where they have devised a trail amongst the native foliage. Saw one little lizard. Apparently, there are no snakes in Bermuda...or the sort of large insects that I came to love in Japan's subtropical climate.

Next, we headed down the street, stopping to take some pictures at the Anglican church. A very nice lady with a lovely accent showed us around the interior of the church. She is a native of Bermuda, born here in 1920...her parents emigrated from England after her father was wounded in WWI. She suggested that we try a climb to the top of the belltower. $3.00/each, so quite a steal. A circular staircase, winding around and around and fairly narrow, but we made it. It was worth $6.00, for certain, for the view alone.

The strangest event of the day occurred when the nice church lady (please, no Dana Carvey jokes) gave Hans a Star Wars book that she was reading, declaring that "A friend had given it to her and she found it very weird". So now we are owners of a very used copy of an early Star Wars paperback from Bermuda. It will always have an interesting story behind it.

After this, we jumped on the bus and took a very long ride from Hamilton out to the westernmost tip of the island, home of the Royal Navy Dockyard. Hans could tell you more about the history of the area--he took the tour while I went shopping. There's...you guessed it...another old fort there, in addition to a lot of nice artsy shops, like a glassblower and a pottery studio. Stuff I love. I actually didn't find too much. Everything is just so expensive. We did have lunch out there, but are planning a peanut-butter sandwich and Pringles supper.

Took the ferry back over to Hamilton and here we are. Back in our hotel with no further plans for the evening (except, of course, the peanut butter). We checked out the pool and found a lot of good places to lounge outside overlooking the harbor, so we may take our books and go out there in a bit.

That's it for today...

Oh, it sounds so nice to be by a beach right now. Make sure and have a couple of nummy drinks and enjoy the beautiful scenery! Sounds like your having a good time.
We FINALLY got our passports in the mail--I can't wait to take a trip!

Passports are a very valuable thing to have, for certain. I'm glad that you and Eli got them (and Leah, too? she does need one if you travel together). It's funny because Hans read your comment to me right after we got upstairs from having a very rummy/nummy drink downstairs on the patio overlooking the harbor. Accompanied by a lovely tropical sunset. Ahhhhhh....

You sound very relaxed, Rach. Apparently visiting forts is very good for you! Sounds like Bermuda is a nice place to visit. Focus on your "devastatingly handsome" husband and enjoy yourself!!!
