Bermuda #4

Skipped #3, sorry about that. I'm sure you really don't want to be bored with a play-by-play of every single moment of our vacation. Day #3 was very nice. We spent it on the easternmost end of the island, in the little town of St. George. Hans visited another fort, Fort St. Catherine, while I found a place to sit outside with my book. The view really kept distracting me, though, so I didn't get much reading done. If there's one thing that I am really loving about Bermuda, it's the amazing aquamarine color (and clarity) of the water.

Hans found out on his tour of the fort that there are eighteen (!) forts in various degrees of ruin on Bermuda. That seems like a lot, but in actuality, they were probably all very necessary as Bermuda is very full of...nooks? Maybe that's not the right word. There are lots of bays and inlets and points. Lots of places of entry by enemies.

Today, we spent the majority of the day at the beach. There are two Fairmont hotels here, the one we're staying in in Hamilton, and one on the southwestern side of the island. The other hotel has its own private beach, so we jumped on the bus and went over there today. The original intent was to go to Horseshoe Bay Beach, but once we got there and saw the enormous crowds, we went around the corner to the Fairmont's private beach, found chairs and got towels and eventually, after much angst, an umbrella to shade us. We don't look too bad after a day in the sun..thank God for 50SPF sunscreen. I have been using it liberally, but still got a bit of a burn on my calves and tops of my feet today. Hans' face looks a little red...and his legs got a bit of burn today, too.

Think we'll live. Enjoy the pictures!

Bermuda looks even nicer than I had imagined. It looks as if you are in the south seas somewhere. The sun is extra bright there but are the temps high? Have fun and pretend you're childless.
