First Baseball Game

Is there any past-time quite as quintessentially American as baseball?
Today was Josiah's first baseball game. Well, technically, it is teeball, but in a couple of years he will graduate to full-fledged baseball. His first game was meant to be last Saturday morning, but we got rained out. Today was gorgeous, a nice hot sun with a good cool breeze.
Both teams batted twice. I wish I could say for sure that this is two innings, but I'm not certain. I used to think I knew what an inning was, but I seem to recall a conversation with someone in which my ideas of baseball were corrected. Peder? What constitutes an inning?
Josiah did well...he has a tendency to goof off a little bit in these situations. He has inherited this tendency from his mother, I will freely admit. I had problems standing still, listening, controlling myself, paying attention....
What was I saying? I got distracted there.
Anyway, Josiah likes to goof off a little. You know, stuff like horsing around, putting his glove on his head and catching with his hat. I've had to deliver a couple of stern lectures lately about calming down, paying attention and listening to coach. He did pretty good today. I only had to give him the motherly glare once when he did the glove/hat switcheroo. He batted well, caught a fielder and threw it and made two home runs.
The only thing missing was the concession stand. Man, we used to go watch my Uncle Paul play fast-pitch softball (correct me if I'm wrong on any of this Dad) in Odin years ago. The thing that I remember most was the concession stand--serving not only the standard popcorn and candy but also homemade goodies from all the Lutheran ladies in the area. Bars...oh yeah. I miss the bars. Also, the playground and the ponies that lived on the farm that adjoined the field. I had myself some serious pony-lust in those days. Those were good times.
I think that my Uncle Paul was also number 4, come to think of it! Does anyone recall?

And of course, I hope any good Minnesotan will mean that by BARS, I mean sweet cakelike things served in a pan, not a place with alcoholic beverages. I don't think there was actually a bar IN Odin...

"We need more bars!" One of my favorite lines from Drop Dead Gorgeous. An inning is 3 outs by each team starting with the visiting team.

Sorry Heidi, I should have included you in the query...I forget that you are as big a Cubs fan as your brother.

;) (Kidding, you two)

I could be wrong but I think the Cubs definition of an inning is 'when the baseball guys stop for some reason and it's time to get another beer'.

I don't think the same "rules" apply to tee-ball. I remember many days and nights watching my Dad play and later manage the Ormsby softball team. As a teenager, I watched the game and the good looking young men/boys. Yes we all know about bars (except Californians). Two home runs!! Way to go Josiah.

Josiah, I am so proud of you! I sure hope you put "take Grandma D to my softball game" on your list for me to do when I come to see you - which is coming up soon!!

Hans, I'm sorry you are missing this. Thankfully, Rachel recorded this important event.

Rachel, do you want to add "make bars" when I come over?

It looks as if you have gotten the answers to your questions and Kathy filled you in on the Ormsby softball saga. I believe that "Dutches" was open in Odin at that time or at least there was the pool hall. When my Dad was playing and I was a gradeschooler (is that two words?) we used to run around the bases after games and get filthy, it's lucky Mom didn't make us walk home from Ormsby (3 1/2 miles). The "good old days".

i remember going over to where the ponies were and petting them also. and gramma in the concession stand selling her dessert bars. i think uncle paul was number 4. do you remember the one woman that was constantly screaming GO LU!!! all the time?she always had on these short shorts with high heels to match. those were some good times in odin. i was very proud of uncle paul the umpire.

Kris, no I don't recall that woman, but she sounds very fancy to have been living around those parts. She must have been an Odin fast-pitch softball groupie. I'm sure there were some good looking single guys on the team! #4 included!

We went all the way to Grand Forks that one year that the team went to the playoffs (is that the right term?). Did you guys go up there too?

The lady in the short shorts and hi-heels was Louey Heller's wife Karen. It seems that she was always dressed fit to kill.
