They Have Bosoms!

I'm sorry that I need constant reassurance that you all are interested in what I write. This is what happens when you grow up never getting any praise or love from your parents...

I need reassurance. Thank you very much for understanding.

Yesterday was a busy day. Josiah and Annika went to school. Josiah (gasp!) participated in the group project, making me a lovely construction-paper caterpillar. Awww, it's adorable. The caterpillar, after having hung for an allotted time on the refrigerator door, will make its way into the plastic tub of artwork under Josiah's bed. It's a keeper. The caterpillar has a face, with eyes and a smile...it's only been recently that Josiah has started adding a recognizable face to anything "alive" that he draws.

Just so long as this guy never gets ahold of Josiah's artwork: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=irule2. Anyone who is offended by general swearing and evilness should not open this page. But I have to say that it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Hans and I still joke about this guy's page.

Back to yesterday. I did story time (is it storytime or story time?) at the CDC and the library yesterday. The CDC went well. Unbelivably, the toddlers were extremely well behaved and did not run to me and start chewing on my leg like a bunch of piranhas, like they usually do. They sat down and listened attentively. It may be that I finally found some books that they can manage to pay attention to...I think I may have been bringing in books with a few too many words and not enough pictures.

Story time at the library went well, too. I have to come up with a theme, so for this past week, I chose princes and princesses. Easy, right? The problem is that the library here is woefully lacking in the children's section. It's pretty sad, actually. A lot of the books are from the mid-1960s, which is fine...I like classic books too. In REPRINT. These are the original, tattered books from 1966 or whatever. They do have some newer books, but surprisingly few. It's as if they have a budget of $250 to buy books, so they buy 20 new books once a year and that's it. They're done. I would estimate that 5 out of 10 books are torn, or drawn in. It makes me sad and I wish that I could help them do something about it.

Anyway, so there's a dearth of books, but I managed to find four or five that contained the word "princess" or "king". I spent half of Wednesday night cutting out construction paper crowns for the kids to decorate with faux jewels, feathers, pom-poms and sequins. We did our crowns first--they loved the crowns, and I'm still wishing that I had had the camera. Oh well. Then we read the stories. I guess they were a little bored. Five or six of the older kids sat attentively throughout, but most of the younger ones were yakking or wandering off or coming up to hang on my leg or stick random sequins on my face. It's a little frustrating, but I tried telling myself that it takes a bit of practice to be able to pick an array of books that appeal to children between the ages of one and six. I'm still working on it. Obviously.

Somehow I ended up babysitting Carson and Nicholas last night. I went down to get Jen's opinion on a new pair of jeans (Gap sailor trouser jeans, on sale for $29.99--get thee some) and ended up bringing Carson and Nick back upstairs with me. Jen needs a break and I keep urging her to let me watch them so she can have one. She's always watching other people's kids (including, sometimes mine) in addition to her two own high-energy guys. She's always doing something kind and thoughtful for everyone else. I keep begging her to let me watch the guys so she can get a massage. I look at it as helping Jen but also, cornily enough, as supporting the troops, because her husband is downrange and hey--she's got enough stress in her life. Girl needs a breeeeaaaak! So I took Carson and Nick for a couple of hours. Carson played Wii, we watched a movie and had a "picnic" in front of the TV, then after Annie went to bed, the boys watched some "Star Wars: Clone Wars". I never thought I'd say it, but:

GOD BLESS YOU, STAR WARS!!

Because they were absolutely silent and attentive, except when Carson declared to me that there's no such thing as girl Jedis. Ummmm, nuh-uh! I had to get out one of Hans' books full of dramatic Star Wars comic-book art and show Carson all the chick jedis and sith. He didn't believe they were ladies until I pointed out the fact that they had bosoms. That's what I called them, bosoms. Hopefully I haven't damaged Carson for life.

Go, Asajj! Girl Power!!

You have a found another niche! The reading, I mean. Isn't there some way to update books? Fundraisers?
