Boogers, Spring Clothes, Star Wars!
Time to catch up, I know. I'm behind on my posting. I wanted to let everyone digest the Genevieve post. I'm glad that you guys enjoyed it. Even that guy, Adam, who left a comment. I'm sure that he's totally legit, right?
So...we have been very busy the last few days. We started daylight savings time last weekend. I think we're finally getting adjusted to it...I think. It's amazing to me just how much difference one hour makes. It's just one little teeny hour. Why have I been feeling so tired all week long?
I think it's because Annika has had a big 'ol boogery cold this week. She's been her normal self, for the most part, interspersed with bouts of whining and bad temper. No fever, just amazing amounts of snot. And all of you parents out there know how much fun it is to try to keep a child's nose clean. If there's one thing I cannot stand, it's a child with a thick rope of snot hanging on his upper lip. Ewwwww...Josiah went to preschool in Middletown with this little boy who had boogers like that every single week...and the little boy would put his fingers in it and sort of pull it, like taffy, and stretch it to his tongue and eat it. I'm getting the shivers just remembering his gummy, gooey little face.
Anyway, I've been on Annika night and day to keep the boogers at bay. Tylenol makes a good cold product that not only dries up the snot but has some nice extra ingredient that makes the child...sleepy. Placid. Thanks, Tylenol! We're not abusing it, but it has come in handy during the night. Annika also loves Little Noses saline drops. Hans and I both had to pin her down to get those in her nose. I wish they made swaddling for toddlers. I guess we used to wrap the cat in a bath towel to give him medicine. Maybe that technique would work for Annika. She sure claws like one.
I think that the river of boogers is finally starting to dry up, but by now, she's left with a pink nose and raw upper lip, so I'm having to pin her down, wipe her nose (gently) and apply a little Vaseline. She's a bit of a mess, naturally.
Josiah is fine. Woo-hoo, he partcipated in the group projects at school on Tuesday and Thursday. I didn't have to endure any little sermons from the teacher and actually, she was unusually friendly and nice to me today. Very suspicious. Anyway, Josiah managed to play with other children and as part of the group, so he got a gold star in preschool this week and I guess Hans and I can relax and not worry about him growing up to be a lonely hermit, eating TV dinners every night and watching reality dance competitions.
Of course, I will love him if he turns out to be a lonely hermit. I will make sure to take him fresh fruit every week. Mustn't get scurvy!
Got my spring clothes out. I know...you're excited. Now I'm just rambling. I had to go down into our cage in the basement, which sounds scary, but it is sooooo less scary than the basement in Newport. Each apartment in our stairwell has a nice, 10'x6' locked room in the basement where we can store things. I've just found out that we also have two very big rooms on the other side of the hallway where we can store things, albeit unlocked. I put a few things in there that I wasn't concerned about losing (Hans' Star Wars Legos, his collection of 80s music, his complete collection of Navy ballcaps from various ships, letters from his ex-girlfriends, etc.). Spent some time going through the boxes and boxes of stuff still left in our cage. I found some things I had been looking for...knitting needles, our good stained-glass lamp. Rearranged the boxes and now we have some open space. I'll have to buy some German furniture to fill it up!
We're thinking of going to Zurich this weekend or to Lake Constance. We're not sure where we'll end up. What a life, eh? I still get a little thrill by how flippantly I say "Hey, if nothing's doing, let's just head on down to Switzerland this weekend, OK?". We're also considering a trip to Belgium soon. Let's just say that there's a certain Star Wars exhibit there that I am dying to see. They have a Jedi school. How can we pass that up? This could be the in that we need. Yoda keeps ignoring our application for Josiah and our letters...damn you, Yoda. Meet face to face, we will.
PS: HANS. Relax. I didn't really put any of those things in the unlocked room! Besides, some of those things don't even exist anymore.
