Destination: Kabul

Just a quick message to let everyone know that we made it up to the air terminal at Ramstein and Hans' flight left around 8:15 p.m. Germany time. He told me that the flight lasts around seven hours, which surprised me...I thought it might be a 3-4 hour flight.

What a surprise that I would misjudge distances over here, right? This is the same person who thought it would take six hours to drive to Rome. Uh-huh.

I'm glad that he's gone for one reason: because now every moment that passes is a moment closer to having him safely back home again.

Thanks to everyone for phone calls, e-mails, prayers and thoughts.

Yes, many prayers will be offered for Hans AND for you and the kids. We love you, and we're only a phone call away...any time!

I'm also surprised that it is that long a flight, but in checking their time zone, I noticed they are 3.5 hours ahead of you.

Hans, in your honor, I ate macaroni and cheese for lunch. It was good!

Be safe - - ALL of you. That is my prayer.

I have been looking at a world map and wondering what route the plane flies to get there. Iran and the Soviet Union are kind in the way of a direct flight to Kabul. We will be adding a special prayer for all of your safety etc. I am sure that Hans will find this deployment exciting but I hope not too exciting. I imagine that he will have access to e-mail out there won't he?

My prayers will also have Hans' safe return in them. God bless the military men and women and families that they leave behind.
I will add to the thoughts and prayers for Hans and you and the beautiful kids.

I also had Macaroni and cheese yesterday.

Please know that you are all thought of and appreciated each and every day.

Darned right I'll be hitting the knees for Hans tonight, Rachel. You guys are always in my thoughts, and if there's anything I can do here in scenic Maplewood, let me know.

I'll try to hit Noodles & Co. next week for mac n' cheese.
