Dory Freshens Up

I just found Annika sitting in the middle of her bed, busily scrubbing her Dory fish figurine's mouth with a toothbrush. Well, I guess even fish need their teeth brushed...do fish even have teeth? Normal fish, I mean. Not sharks. Of course sharks have teeth. Duh.

Josiah has decided that his latest interest is death. He keeps asking us questions about dying.

When are we going to die?
Mommy, will you die before me?
How do people die?
Mommy, will you come with me when I die?
What is heaven like?

You know, nice, easy questions about dying like those. Eeek. Hans made sure to tell him about hell too, which I didn't feel was completely necessary for a four-year-old. Why get Josiah immediately frightened of death because there's a small possibility that he could wind up heading in the other direction? Why not let him mature a bit and get more informed before telling him about hellfire and brimstone and Satan? I'm almost 34 and I still really don't enjoy thinking about hellfire and brimstone, even though I'm fully aware that it's an option.

Mommy, will you come with me when I die? I've got to say that this one really floored me. I told him that I would in all likelihoods (please God, please God) die before he did, but that when it was his turn to die, I would be there waiting to help him up to heaven. And when he wanted to know what heaven is like, I told him that no one really knows for certain, but that it is the most unimaginably wonderful place. Full of Thomas trains? he asked. Definitely, I said.

Last night I went to sit with Carson and Nick while Jen ran to the train station to pick up another neighbor who was returning from Paris. They have cats. It has been a long time since I had an allergic reaction to cats, so I was playing with one of the cats. Yeah. Turns out that I'm still viciously allergic to them and apparently, my body has been storing up a doozy of an allergic reaction for me. My left eye was almost swollen shut last night and still doesn't look great this morning. We lived with a cat for years, and though I suffered from itchy eyes, I never had my eye swell shut.

I took four Children's Benadryl last night...so needless to say, I'm feeling a bit doped out this morning. And it didn't help my eyes in the least.

Jen and I went to IKEA yesterday, which was a bit foolish seeing as Baden-Wurttemburg's (the state that Stuttgart is in) students just broke from school for six weeks. All of Germany's states take turns with their summer vacation. Jen and I thought that IKEA would be quiet and peaceful on a Tuesday afternoon. We were going to put the three boys in the playroom and casually stroll along looking intently at everything with Annika. The playroom was completely full with a line of parents waiting for one child to leave so that their child could get squeezed into the ball pit. So, we ended up dragging the boys along with us. We skipped the display floor completely and went immediately into the shopping floor, where we were swept along in a current of Germany humanity, barely able to reach out and grab what we needed as we "floated" by.

I still ended up with two new plastic bins, a little pink potty (maybe she'll pee in it if it's pink!), a package of ocean critter finger puppets (with which we made up a very silly play last night), another package of IKEA's fantastic bibs, and new plastic plates and cups for the kids. Annika has officially been restricted from use of sippy cups, so we need more regular cups.

Started watching the first season of "Lost". It's pretty good so far. I like to imagine what I'd do in their places. I'd be the ditzy blonde girl who was giving herself a pedicure on the beach the day after the crash. I think her name is Shannon. I'm guessing that the "monster" or whatever it is, is going to eat ol' Shannon pretty quickly.

I'm also starting the third season of "Weeds". I told Hans last night that I really wish we had bought a simply iPod for me, rather than an iPod with video capabilities. Sigh.

I downloaded the soundtrack from "Sound of Music" yesterday too. I'm practicing Gen. Anytime you're ready...I'm ready.

I'm thinking Joe will be a deep thinker! So you haven't developed an immunity to cat allergy, huh? That's too bad. Sounds like things are much busier in Stuttgart with school out! Glad you were able to find "something" at IKEA!
