I'm sure some of you have been wondering what's been happening here at Camp D4 2008.

Without further ado, here is a very quick rundown:

  • Mom and Dad arrived last Friday
  • On Saturday, we went down to Tubingen for a little picnic and to wander the streets. We took the long way home through the country.
  • On Sunday, we were lazy, except for having supper at a German restaurant nearby.
  • On Monday, Memorial Day, we attended a program here on base, had a quick lunch and then headed to Freiburg to meet Hartwin Thielhorn, our (not-so-distant) relation that we recently discovered. We spent a few hours with him and his lovely wife, pored over some family trees, pictures and other information and then drove home the long way, through the Schwarzwald.
  • My parents love to take the long way home.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were fairly normal days. Josiah had his last two days of school, I had storytime, etc.
  • Somewhere in between all this stuff, we watched 10 episodes of "Band of Brothers".
  • Friday we loaded up and went to see Schloss Lichtenstein. Mom and Dad toured the castle while the kids and I played on a nearby playground. Having experienced Schloss Lichtenstein once prior with a screaming toddler, I decided to play it safe and not even venture through the gates.
  • Yesterday, we rented a nine-passenger VW van (Hans almost had a stress-related heart attack from having to drive something so uncool and lacking in power), loaded everyone and the kitchen sink up, and drove to the American cemetery at Luxembourg and on to Bastogne. We even drove through Foy.

So, that's a quick recap of what we've been doing here at Camp D4 2008. Today we're going to make some lanyards and wallets in the craft hut.

Hopefully I'll be able to blog in more detail about our experiences. Things are still a bit hectic. We have a slow day today and then tomorrow, we're off to Garmisch for two nights!

I just had another chance to check out these new photos. They beautiful! I especially love the one of Annika and Josiah sitting on the marble bench, smiling adoringly at each other. That's a keeper!

I can hear Hans now, actually. That mental voice is going to stay with me for a little bit. I wish I had my camera today, too; it was Grand Old Day, and it was quite lovely (for once). You guys would laugh at my moustaches.

Incidentally, Joe looks like he's ready to go to Berlin, to personally SHOOT that paper-hangin' son-of-a...

Mom,
We found a William Reed from Minnesota at the Luxemburg cemetary. I couldn't remember Aunt Liz' brother-in-law's first name.

Andrew, and after Joe does that, FDR will change Thanksgiving to Joe De For day and everyone will get to go home.

And he'll get $10,000 a year for life, too.
