So Long, Farewell

This past Friday and Saturday marked our farewell tour in Garmisch. To try something a little different, we decided to stay in a "deluxe cabin" on the kaserne side, across the river from the resort. It was nice having our own little cabin with a front yard, porch, a bedroom for Hans and me and a loft overhead for the bigger two. We had our own little kitchenette to cook in--I always like to save a buck when it comes to food!
On Saturday morning, we hiked Partnach Gorge, which is one of those things we've been meaning to do for...about 2-1/2 years. We had to park the truck about 1/2 mile away from the gate into the gorge. Josiah and Annika jumped out to investigate the river and approximately 12 seconds later, Josiah fell in and was completely wet from head to foot! Thank God Annika had the good sense to holler at Hans, who ran to fish him out. It wasn't particularly deep in that spot, but it's still pretty fast moving. Luckily, I had brought along a coat for Josiah, so we stripped his shirt off and hung it on Will's backpack to dry while Josiah wore his coat. Partnach was beautiful--hard to describe...you hike along under this ledge of rock right next to the raging turqouise river, winding along through tunnels hewn through the rock, to emerge in the open with a breathtaking view of the Alps.
We hiked another 20 minutes uphill to have lunch at the very hotel Genevieve and I stayed at back in February (a much better view this time, sorry Gen!). Along the way, I finally got my "twirling a la "The Sound of Music" in the Alps" photo. All in all, a beautiful day, despite Josiah's falling into the river and the fact that he was sick and throwing up off and on both Friday and Saturday.
And so we say Auf Wiedersehen to one of our most favorite places on earth. I hope that someday we will return to this amazing area...sigh. If I had to pick one place to live in Europe, Garmisch would be it! It is himmel, plain and simple.
