Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Well, it's Annika's second birthday today. It's just plain unbelievable to me that she's two already. It seems like just a few months ago, I was enormously pregnant and incredibly irritated with her for not being born in a timely fashion. Even though I was technically in the second phase of labor (and had been for a few days) and had spent hours walking, or rather--waddling, she just refused to emerge. She didn't come until she was perfectly ready and until I had made my peace with the situation. And then, she came in a fine hurry, as if to make it up to me! I still remember the feel of her tiny, pefectly shaped, amazingly hairy little head...

Anyway, she was born in Japan, had her first birthday in Newport and now a second birthday in Germany. She's like some rich heiress or something. Maybe we'd better try to have her third birthday in Cannes or Greece or Rome, just to keep things interesting!

Annika, thank you for expanding our happiness more than we thought possible. You are a sweet, happy (except when visiting castles), enthusiastic, smart little girl. Every day you surprise us with something new. You are starting to talk in little sentences. You have an amazing capacity for remembering things. You have such a goofy sense of humor. You become attached to the most mysterious things: two days ago you picked up a variety of little pinecones outside and decided that you simply had to carry them around in your purse all day. You have to sleep with an amazing plethora of things: books, blankets, stuffed animals, water cups, purses full of pinecones.

Please don't ever change. Except for the pinecones, because people may think it a bit odd if you're 35 and carrying around a purse full of pinecones!

Happy Birthday Princess!

Your entry makes me want to cry, Rach. When I first saw Annie in the hospital in Japan (after a long hug with you and not even noticing her), I thought she was SO beautiful! And last year on her first party, she wouldn't wear the tiara. Looks like she likes a tiara now that she's a mature two-year-old. And tell Annie that I love pine cones too! May you and she enjoy many happy years of friendship... from Mom
