Miss Annie Turns Eight!

It's been a snowy couple of weeks in Yokosuka.  Yes...I know, when compared to Minnesota it's not really all that snowy.  Or cold.  But--there has been a LOT of snow in this part of Japan.  They are completely and I mean, completely, unprepared for snow.  Our first storm, about two weeks ago, dumped around 6-8" on us and more further north in Yokohama and Tokyo.  They shut the expressway down, the trains were down...everything was closed down.  They don't really have plows or snow removal equipment.  We got another 4-6" on Friday, so school was cancelled.  Whee, four day weekend!

Oh, just so you all can rest easy, we've had two days of 50+ degree weather, so the snow is pretty much all gone.  Don't hate.  I can't help weird Japanese weather!

It's been a bit since I wrote and that's because I've been busy.  Too busy to blog?  Meh, not really.  I just didn't have much to say.  I was sick, the kids were sick, Hans was gone.  I didn't get to go up to Sapporo, but that was probably all for the best as the snow came on the weekend I was meant to leave and I'd most likely still be sitting at Narita, trying to get home.

Miss Annie turned eight on Saturday!  It's definitely surreal celebrating her birthday where she was born...something that I never thought would happen.  Her birthdays have been:  Newport, Stuttgart (2, 3 and 4), Chesapeake, Norfolk and back to Yokosuka.  She had a pretty good day on Saturday, except for the snow interrupting our plans to go to Tokyo for the day.  We had to stay in, but she opened gifts first thing in the morning, had Pokémon pancakes for supper (Lord, how I despise making Pikachu pancakes...gah).  I made a cake.  It would be on Cakewrecks if there was an existing picture of it...it was terrible.  I followed the instructions.  I used the same pan for both of the layers and one turned out smaller than the other...so then I was trying to even them out and we all know how that turns out.  Crumbly mess.  Thank goodness for frosting!  It hides a multitude of sins.

Kind of like yoga pants with a really wide waistband.  What?  I'm packing on my winter chub.  I know this firsthand.

I'll have to download pictures from our trip to Tokyo another time...they're all on my phone.  I really wish that I would have brought the good camera along, because we ended up doing much more than just going to the Pokémon store.

Happy Birthday to sweet Annika, who is a bundle of energy, stubborn and willful, smart and sassy, equal parts grubby and glamorous, possessed of a complete lack of fear and a depth of empathy that shows itself in fits and starts.  I'm so happy to come back to this place, full circle, and celebrate these eight years with you!

Love her big smile! It looks as if the gang is doing well. We had some snow here while we were gone, so will need to spend some time scooping today.
