Yokosuka Gazette 12/8/13

Happy Change of Command Eve.  It's a holiday!  We are celebrating it in various stages of sickness.  William = snotty and congested all week.  Annika = started barfing last night and has been lethargic all day (not necessarily a bad thing).  Josiah = appears to still be OK.  Rachel = sinusy, runny nose and end-of-day sore throat.  Steve and Donna and Hans all appear to be OK at this time.

Seriously though, pray for us.  It would be the worst if Hans suddenly got the puking flu in the middle of the night.

OK, so this week was actually pretty quiet.  As you may or may not know courtesy of Facebook, I cut off all my hair on Monday.  Not all of it, there's still enough to mess around with, but I'm already dreaming of cutting it even shorter.  Why in the heck didn't I do this sooner?  I have this dreadfully fine, thin hair that grows about to my shoulders and then just quits on me.  Every time I grow it out, I think "This is going to be the time that I figure out how to make my long hair look good".  And every time it looks like crap.  So, I cut it off.  Done and DONE.  Hans walked in just as my stylist was getting ready to dry it...he (Hans) looked a little shocked, but he says he likes it.  After HOW many years of him telling me he didn't like short hair?

Just in case you missed it on Facebook.

Hmmm.  What else?  We've just been hanging out, doing normal family stuff, getting closer and closer to the Big Day.  The regular routine:  groceries, NEX, post office, Autoport, NEX, post office, library.  Change the litter box.  Vacuum.  Vacuum again five minutes later.  I guess I did go out for lunch with the Commodore's wife and the other CO's spouses this week.  We went to a French restaurant down some hidden little alley (that's where all the best restaurants in Yokosuka are, I'm finding).  Lunch was fantastic, dessert even better, company stellar.  The Commodore's wife is Kanako--she is actually from Yokosuka!  What an invaluable resource to have here...not that I'm going to call her up and ask where to find this or that.  She was very fun and not at all how you would picture a Commodore's wife...now, if I could just hear the word "Commodore" without immediately wanting to say 64 after it, like I have a nervous tick.

My Dad is the only person NOT scratching his head at that last sentence...

Now Steve and Donna are here.  We picked them up at the airport on Thursday night...it was quite the crazy drive as Siri led us through the bowels of Tokyo in a strange, roundabout way.  Oh, we got to Narita all right, but only after almost three hours of being routed and rerouted.  Trust.  One must have trust that Siri will not lead us astray.  Anyway, we all five went and lo, Grandma and Grandpa were there and we all packed into the minivan and drove home--strangely enough, it took much, much less time to get home.  Damn you, Siri.

Friday, we went to Kamakura.  Will stayed at Sara's and Josiah and Annika had tsunami/earthquake drill and then were out of school at 11:00, so it was four adults and two kids on the train.  I took some pictures, but they suck because they're Hipstamatics...my good camera was out of batteries (which I found out en route to Kamakura, grrr).  Kamakura is lovely and has a couple of streets of lovely little shops.  Enjoy the pictures...I gnashed my teeth in frustration knowing that I couldn't do this place justice with the iPhone 5.

Oh, OK, this one is pretty good.

Tomorrow's the BIG DAY!!!  Clothes have been ironed and lint rolled.  Waterproof mascara, check.  Extra Kleenex, check.  Batteries in camera and video camera, check.  I think it's all coming together.  Now pray that we (and especially Hans) don't get sick.  I will report back at some point in the very near future with pictures and play-by-play!!

See you from the other side...

Yes, I do remember the Commadore 64, and it is one of Murphy's laws that the camera batteries will crap out at the most inopportune times. I duuo, those pictures in the blog look pretty fine to me and my amateur eye. Looking forward to seeing the Change of Command live and in color tonight.Still trying to figure out how to record it so that we can show it around.
