Island Girl
Lots of visits with new and old friends who are stationed in Newport.
I got to go back to my old salon and get my hair colored and sneak in a quick pedicure while being processed. I am now glamorous enough to get on a 14 hour flight to Tokyo.
You think being glamorous has nothing to do with it? Oh yes, I must look like I have my stuff together because I am doing this alone with three children. Having perfectly done toenails and no roots showing helps boost my confidence, which in turn helps me to deflect the glares of every other passenger on that jumbo jet. You know, the "You are DARING to bring CHILDREN on this FLIGHT?!" look?
Mom and Dad won't recall this since we didn't fly anywhere together. Well, and since my siblings and I were always very well-behaved, quiet and obedient. Even if we had gotten on a flight bound for Heathrow in 1985, no one would have batted an eyelash.
Furiously charging Kindles, checking to make sure everyone has sufficient amounts of downloaded material (no WiFi or power outlets--I tremble in fear). We made a trip to Barnes & Noble for sticker and activity books for the moment the Kindles go dark (gulp). Monday, I will shop for snacks and treats. Possibly Benedryl.
Today, I think we'll try to see "Planes" somewhere.
News from Japan: I have an appointment set up with housing for 1:00 on 8/15...in their words they will "give me my assignment" then, which is mysterious but I think means that they have a house waiting for us, which is great except for the unaccompanied baggage snafu that means that we have no dishes, no pans, no sheets, no towels. Until mid-September.
At least I'll have a roof over my head.
Driving test is set for some time on Friday, 8/16. I have been studying my Japanese road signs and I think I'm ready to go. I have a line on a car that should be ready to go for my use when I'm done with my test, after which I plan to go to the commissary and stock my fridge. Oh, and the package store to stock my wine cellar.
That's the plan anyway...since I have it in mind this way, something will happen to throw a wrench in it.
Oh, and our flight has been rearranged again...now we are flying out of Logan around 1:00 on Tuesday.
Deep breaths. I am ready.
