She'll Steal His Heart Away...
Or maybe I should say, she'll "steel" his heart away, ha! I spent some time yesterday gathering as much information as possible about Hans' new ship, USS GRAVELY (DDG-107). I may as well get to know the beauty who will steal him from me for long periods of time, right?!
I cannot express how excited I was yesterday morning to wake up and find an e-mail in Hans' inbox letting him know that the slate had been posted. There was just one problem: Hans is in Normandy and I couldn't access his account to find out any information! I'm telling you, all sorts of crazy ways of trying to get it flashed through my mind, but in the end, our great friend Jen Mills (sponsor and friend extraodinaire/Navy officer) logged in and got the info off the slate.
I'm telling you, I am absolutely thrilled. Given the situation, I don't think Hans could have done any better. GRAVELY is a brand, brand new ship with all the latest technology. It's the difference between driving a 1973 Gremlin and a 2010 Porsche, you know? It would have added insult to injury if they had stuck him on some old cruiser or frigate. Given the circumstances, I think that Hans is pretty pleased. Of course, he would never get all giddy or anything...that's just not Hans, right?
Anyway, I jumped up and down and squealed for a few minutes after I hung up with Jen and thereafter, spent several hours trying to call Hans in Normandy (these damn German cell phones--worthless!) or trying to send him a telepathic message to call me...ah God, it was killing me, the desire to give him this excellent piece of news. In the meantime, I think I posted on my Facebook, his Facebook and called Marguerite, Genevieve, Mom and Donna. If it hadn't been raining, I probably would have run out into the street and started randomly hugging people or something...
I told Josiah "Take a look at Mommy being this happy because it doesn't come around very often!"
Finally, finally Hans called and I was able to break the good news. I should have faked it and looked up some leaky old tub and told him that was his ship...awww, I didn't have the heart to break his poor Navy spirit any further! He called from Mont Saint Michel, what a rough life, eh? And as I said, he sounded about as excited and giddy as Hans can sound when I finally stammered the news out.
Damn, I'm so proud of him. And just for the record, I would have been just as proud of him being XO on a leaky old frigate. But the beautiful brand new ship...well, it helps us both feel a little better in this situation we're in. Thank you, Navy, for getting ONE thing right in the last 18 months...
Now. We don't know when we'll be moving to Norfolk. Hans has one, probably two, maybe even three schools that he'll have to attend before reporting to GRAVELY. We haven't positively verified it, but we have good word that he will report to the ship in March, so back that up for schools and it's probably in the fall of this year. Probably.
SO much to do, eeek! I need to start making a big list and soon. As soon as Hans gets back from gallivanting around Normandy...
