Blog from Prague (Part I)
Here I am, blogging from our little apartment in the heart of Prague. Annika and I have just returned from a little wander around the evening streets. It's 9:00 p.m. and Hans is trying to get them into bed (and having little luck).
As usual, what should have been an uneventful, 4-1/2 hour drive turned into something horrible...things went along swimmingly until we got to Prague. First mistake, driving in Prague at rush hour. Second mistake, listening to Dora as she circled us around and around. To be fair to poor Dora (who was silently cursed and threatened with a pitching from the window), there is a lot, a LOT of construction going on in downtown Prague. One can hardly blame Dora for not knowing that a street that used to run to the right no longer exists or is suddenly a one way. From the other direction.
We drove around for almost two hours before we finally gave up, seeing no solution to the construction problem and the end of everyone's good temper. I seriously was starting to worry that we would never find the American Embassy and the apartments. I was on the verge of suggesting that we just drive out of town and hang the expense, when Hans came up with the idea for me to get a cab and he would follow the cab.
He's brilliant...part of the reason I married him!
So I hopped into a cab and begged the driver to take me to the American Embassy and to make sure to keep the red Audi behind us in his mirror (heaven forbid we'd lose Hans and the kids...I might never have seen them again!). Ten minutes later we had picked up the keys and instructions and an hour later after securing parking, we wearily toted our luggage up to the apartment.
Had a decent dinner of pasta and sauce and garlic bread. The things that make this apartment worth the trouble are:
1) Kitchen and thus no worrying about feeding extremely picky eaters...
2) Washing machine and thus no worrying about washing the clothes of messy eaters
3) Seperate bedroom for naughty children who otherwise have trouble going to sleep in one big room (though judging from the noise issuing from said bedroom, this may or may not be beneficial--please pray for them because their father has had enough...)
Anyway, here we are, recovering from the stress of the crazy driving situation in Prague and finding somewhere to park Nessie--we ended up in the private garage of a nearby hotel, parking her next to a Rolls Royce, so I think we're good.
Looking forward to tomorrow!
