Can't Beat Yesterday's Title

So I won't even try. I'm wondering if I have a whole host of new readers who "discovered" my blog while googling "huge sausages". Super. I have this fascinating way of putting my foot in my mouth, usually up past my knee.

If I have a little, tiny, miniscule book listing the three times Hans has been wrong since I met him, Hans has a book the size of a thesaurus filled with all the awkward, bizarre and just plain stupid things I've said. I keep my pencil sharpened to write an entry in my book. He's on his third package of nicely sharpened #2s.

Anyway. Our last Saturday in Newport. Annika is officially running a temperature today and threw up one more time this morning. The carseat has been painstakingly cleaned...seriously, it's a major undertaking to remove the cover from a carseat, untangle all the straps, wash it, clean all the gook and crud from the wells where stuff accumulates, then reassemble the whole thing, all the time praying that you are reassembling it correctly. Could someone out there please invent a waterproof carseat cover? Please?

Josiah and I met his friend Logan for a little Christmas thingy today at the beach. It is quite cold here, with a formidable wind. The party was held at First Beach, not on the beach itself of course, but in a building. There were approximately 1,456 children and their parents attending.

We had fun...rode the carousel three times, watched Santa arrive at the beach in the fire engine and proceeded to play with playdough, stamp a picture, frost and apply 2-1/2 cups of sprinkles to one cookie and smear glue and copious amounts of glitter on a glass ornament. It's precious, I promise. I enjoyed listening to the other parents around me ooooh and aaaaah over every little thing their child did or produced. I mean, it's just kind of funny to me what champions we are for our kids. I don't ever remember Mom and Dad hovering over me and telling me that my misshapen ball of playdough was "The prettiest Christmas wreath ever, ever!"

It's sort of fascinating how parenting styles change from generation to generation.

Not much else going on. We are just working our way through these last couple of days. This evening after dinner, I got bundled up and drove downtown to take a little walk. There are a bunch of boats (and by boats, I mean yachts) along the waterfront that are decorated for the holidays. I walked for awhile downtown, stopped at the Gap, took one last look at some of my favorite downtown Newport sights, like Trinity Church. I drove past our old house three times, just to say goodbye. Now I'm hoping that I won't have to go back in that neighborhood again. I've made my peace and now I'm just looking ahead. Which is hard for a sentimental fool like me.

OK...day number three of nice things about Hans. Thanks for washing a little load of dishes today. Thanks for buying me the book that I wanted and for bringing me a piping hot chai latte. Thanks for getting the kids into their jammies and getting them to bed at 7:30 so that we can have one night where things are quasi-normal. Thanks for letting me watch "Little Miss Sunshine" on HBO when you knew that "The Empire Strikes Back" was on the other channel. That right there lets me know that I am truly, deeply loved.

I wondered if you wouldn't drive around Newport to see the sights one more time. I would be doing the same thing. I'm glad you were stationed there once again and that I was able to come out to see you. It's a neat town.

The party with Josiah, friends and Santa sounded fun. I'm glad he got to do this.

Hopefully Annika will feel all better tomorrow and no one else gets sick.

It's nice reading a new blog from you each day. I'm happy Hans is being good to you.
