A Military-Themed Weekend
Building on the bizarre theme of my last post...thanks so much for all the comments, guys! I checked out Rommel. He's just not my type. Too, I don't know...too...Nazi? I know it would never work out, a posthumous romance with Rommel. But thanks for the suggestions. And Gen, thank God for the internet, so that I don't have to embarrass myself by going out in public to find out about my crushes...I can google them from home to my heart's content.
On to our military-themed weekend, which began with a trip to Fort Adams on Friday. You can visit the fort at www.fortadams.org. Hans and I were a little reluctant to go take a tour there, not for lack of interest, but because of the naughty three-year-old and his blossomingly naughty sister, who learns from his antic every day. Luckily for us, there was no one else on our tour--we got our lovely tour guide all to ourselves. So, we relaxed. A little, because we can almost never totally relax in front of the kids...they smell our relaxation and commence with the crying or pushing or fighting or stealing.
Our tour lasted about an hour and was very interesting, especially because we had the guide to ourselves and could ask all kinds of silly questions, which both of us are very fond of. I was completely flabbergasted by the size of the place, which at its height had 500 cannon. It was so interesting to see all the different fortifications and learn about why certain areas were built in a way to repel or trap invaders. There's even a bunch of tunnels beneath the fort because apparently, invaders were fond of digging tunnels underneath forts and getting in in that manner. Hans and Josiah went with their flashlights and the tour guide. Being the claustrophobic that I am, we ladies stayed outside. Think of that job though--some guy had to sit down there on watch. Eek.
After the tour, we sat out on the point in front of the fort and had our juice boxes and admired the lovely view of the Pell Bridge, Newport and all of the beautiful yachts and sailboats dashing around.
Since the Fort Adams tour went well enough, we decided to chance it and take the kids to Groton, CT on Saturday to see the Navy's submarine base and museum. We took a quick tour of the base...pretty standard, ate at McDonald's and then toured the museum. The museum is free of charge and is a really nice museum. I have to say that I'm not interested in submarines, really (I'm a little partial to surface ships), but it was still interesting enough, what little I saw of it as Josiah dragged me from one end to the other, up and down the stairs, in and out of the rooms and over to drink from the water fountain 1,235 times. Stopped at a cool park on the way home and let the kids run wild. How I love parks that are completely fenced, like a giant playpen. Hans and I were allowed to relax. A little.
Not much else to report. It's raining today and is extremely gloomy. As in, all the lights in the house are on, because it's like twilight in here. I'm keeping busy plotting a trip to New Hampshire and Vermont in mid-July. Should we stop in Maine? I just don't know. It's the burning question. I've never been to Maine, but it's a little out of the way. We shall see, we shall see. We have booked our trip to Bermuda, so that's coming up in a couple of weeks. Sun, sand, relaxation. Real relaxation, sans children!!
