Providence Children's Museum

Today, Donna and I took the kids to the Children's Museum in Providence.

Ugh. That's all I have to say. I'm sure that if you check www.dd4cottage.blogspot.com, Donna will say that it was wonderful. One of the traits that I most admire in Donna is her ability to enjoy herself under any circumstances. I really wish that I could relax and enjoy life as much as she does. Really. Truly.

First of all, we didn't know that this is "spring break" week for the RI public school system. I assumed (when am I going to learn to stop doing that?) that because we were going on a Tueday in the middle of April, there wouldn't be too many kids there. Wrong. There were approximately 5,325 kids there, many of whom were in the 10-13 age range--in other words, way, way too old to be at a museum where the majority of the clientele is still in Pampers.

We got kind of spoiled by the Children's Museum in Boston. It is very large and spacious. There is plenty of room for many strollers to be strolling around, be they tiny Maclarens or enormous double joggers. In Boston, there are tons of exhibits, so the children aren't hording every square inch of every exhibit, thus provoking pushing, shoving and general mayhem.

In Providence, the museum is very small. Donna makes a good point that Boston certainly would have more people and corporations to donate than Providence. She's entirely right (and enviably positive). Add to the small size the 5,325 kids (plus Josiah and Annika), small exhibits crawling with kids, and the fact that it is all in a relatively narrow space, making it very difficult for even the smallest stroller to pass.

All of this adds up to give Rachel hives. Josiah and Annika seemed to have a really good time, though, so it was all worth it, right? Sigh. I am utterly exhausted and the kids should be too, but strangely...they are both wide awake in their rooms, Annika in her crib yakking to herself and Josiah playing with trains during "quiet time".

Not much else to report, I'm afraid. We've just been busy keeping our guest entertained, but seeing as our guest is Donna, that's blissfully easy. Hans and I have been out on a couple of dates...to see a movie and out to dinner last night. The "storm" that was supposedly going to be so awful passed through on Sunday night and really wasn't all that bad. Hans and I took a break and drove out to Brenton Point and parked the car to watch the waves come crashing up. Some of them were so enormous that they crashed right over the road. Pretty awesome stuff, something one doesn't see every day.

OK, got to go get these kids up. Sigh.

It sounds as if your trip to Providence could have gone better. You know what they say about the word assume. I must have heard that one in boot camp 45 years ago. I am beginning to take every weather report and cut it by at least a half. Last week when we got a little snow (2" maybe) they were predicting up to 11". It sounds like your nor'easter wasn't like the end of the world that was predicted. Stay warm and dry and stay in touch.
