Monticello: Not for 37 or 2-Year-Olds

I don't know anything about TJ's gardens, since I didn't go on the tour, but they sure are pretty!

A few moments later, we left that idyllic bench and he dropped his lovey under it. We walked away unknowingly. Upon discovery of missing lovey, I, recovering from the flu and not yet over it, ran what felt like 26.2 miles (uphill) back to that spot to find puppy lovey lying dejectedly under the bench. I would have run 30 miles. We do not abandon our lovies!

It's me and children who are unable to look at a grown man waving and holding a camera! Oh, and that Monticello place (this is the back of the house).

This also, is the back of the house...much more familiar to us since it's pictured on the backside of the nickel.

William and I climbed lots of stairs while we waited for the rest of the party to finish the tour.

He got a little tired of me taking pictures, but he's cute, the house and grounds were pretty and it was a beautiful day. And taking pictures helped me work through the disappointment of not being able to do the tour.

Yes, another shot of the back of the house.

OK, this is actually at the start of the tour, when I thought Will and I were going along! Silly me. The tour was a special "family tour" designed for kids from 6-11 and the guide (in front in green) was handing out a basket of props for the kids. Josiah chose the map of the Louisiana Purchase, how surprising!

Front of Monticello. So, we got all of our props and went in. Found out Will could not be carried in a backpack. Still have no idea why. They had their own strollers, but Will refused to sit in it and the minute we let him out, ran straight to knock over some Wedgwood china or something, so I hightailed it out. I made it into the front entry...that was it. Sigh. They didn't kick us out or anything, I just didn't want the stress of trying to keep him under lockdown for 40 minutes. So he and I bolted.

Josiah and Annika in the garden.

Hans, trying to keep Josiah out of the heirloom seeds...

The beautiful scenery made up for the lack of tour.

See?
