FRG
So, I've had a couple of ship-related events over the last couple of days. This blog is closed to the general public, but I'd rather not mention the ship by name, just in case. We can all just call it "the ship" and we'll know what we're talking about, right?
So far, so good. The ship is just coming back from a six month deployment, so it's an interesting time to start mingling with all the spouses. I feel a little like I'm intruding upon their excitement, but it can't be helped...Hans is set to take over as XO within a very short period of time and so I have to start getting to know them.
FRG is Family Readiness Group and it's basically all the spouses, enlisted and officer (or rather, any that care to attend) getting together and holding meetings. FRG is especially useful at times like this, when the ship is underway and the spouses can band together to lean on one another and share information...it makes the time go by a little more quickly for everyone. One of the spouses there today said that most of her friends just can't understand what it's like, so the FRG provides that service too: these ladies (and the rare guy) can fully understand the rigors of a deployment.
Anyway, I met a few more spouses at the FRG meeting today and greeted the ones that I met at the party last weekend. Got to meet the captain's wife for the first time. She didn't hit me or anything, she seemed pretty nice, so I guess she'll do. They all seem like good people and didn't stare at the stranger in the corner (me) too much. I know that I would have been curious about the newcomer.
We have a busy week coming up. I have another little ship spouse get-together tomorrow for supper. Josiah starts his summer enrichment program on Monday--that's 7:30-noon every day. I'm so thankful for this program, because he's been lounging around here with a bored look on his face since school let out a month ago. I had a message from his teacher who said they'll be studying things like positive and negative numbers, electricity, circuitry and magnetism and literature. Both Josiah and Annika will be continuing on with their swimming lessons--they had cancellations twice last week due to thunder/lightning...explain me this: I understand why they clear the outdoor pool due to storms, but the INDOOR pool? I just don't understand that one. William is starting a music class at the Y, too. Awww, his first little class. I'm excited about that. I'm hoping that he doesn't whack anyone in the head with a tambourine. I remember taking Josiah to his first Kindermusik class in Yokosuka--he went around gathering all the instruments...I remember being mortified that he seemed to be unable to share!
Hans is joining the ship and they pull in at some point during the week. Of course, I can't tell you, you know it's against OPSEC. So we'll go to the base to watch the ship pull in, which will be a major endeavor. I did get told that I will have a VIP parking space, so I do have that to look forward to (parking is going to be a nightmare)...yay for the one perk of being the XO's wife!
