Desperately Seeking Cool

May 2010

May 2011

So...it's been pretty dang hot in these here parts. There was no "Intro to Southern Heat" or "Southern Climate Adjustment 101". We just launched from Spring straight into "Advanced Sweating" and "How to Survive a $300 Electricity Bill Due to Excessive A/C Usage".

I'm just saying: Dear Virginia, it would have been nice to have a little lead-up into this heat, a little segueway, if you will. If you were a dude, you'd be the dude who comes on way too hot and heavy from the beginning. No subtlely.

We've been trying to stay cool. I've been busy modifying my dreams of children spending the day in the backyard (when school is out for the year) to children playing inside due to imminent danger of heat stroke from exposure. This is like Minnesota in reverse...instead of frostbite, I'm afraid they're going to get dehydrated or sunburned.

Anyway...enough about the heat, right? Moving along. Pictures are from Saturday, late afternoon. Well, obviously the first one is not. I just wanted to contrast how different Will looks from last May to this May. He grew a neck! And lost a chin! His head is finally starting to be a little more proportionate to his skinny little body...! We were at the YMCA pool tonight after supper for an hour and that child spent more time underwater than above. He is absolutely fearless and he can sneak away from me while I'm in the middle of a blink. Before you start wringing your hands in worry Grandmas, there are tons of parents and lifeguards at the pool...breathe.

Wish I had something exciting to share...it's been a quiet week so far. We are getting back to normal after a visit from the always pleasant and thoughtful Grandma De For. We did quite a bit of running in this heat: from gymnastics to preschool to school lunch with Josiah. A little shopping, a stop at the beach and the botanical garden and a Memorial Day picnic. We squeezed a lot out of those hours. Oh, and they saw Kung Fu Panda II and we spent some time at the Fun Forest in Chesapeake. Thanks for coming Grandma!

I'm participating in a garage sale this weekend with my friend Angela. I've decided to sell some baby things...ack. It's so hard for me to part with some of this stuff. It's time for the bottles to go, for instance, but I think about the fact that I fed all three of my kids with those bottles. Pray that when someone buys them at the garage sale, I won't fall into tears and not be able to part from them! I'm hoping to add some cash to my "Trip to Minnesota" kitty. So far, I've got my hotels and Gasthaus Kuehl booked, so lodging is free. I'm working on money for gas. And the Threshing Bee. Oh yeah! I can't wait to show my kids the Bee.

That's it for now. I've got to go because Hans needs to slay some dragons or discover some new worlds or something and that's only possible on this computer...

Tschuss Alles!

I am thinking that you will need to get used to the heat and humidity. I remember Biloxi in the Summer, oh wait, I missed actual Summer there. Fall and Spring were bad enough. You are correct, it is like the reverse of Minnesota Winters. I don't know what to say about the electric bill though. Stay wet and in the shade.

Rachel, I had such a good time at your home. The kids, the food, you and Hans, our ventures - all of it - was so nice! I miss you now. It's fun knowing what your routine is so now I can picture Josiah in school, Will playing with puzzles and trains, Annika playing with her zoobelos (sp), Hans - driving to work - you making dinner and playing with the kids. It was all wonderful!
