North Conway Scenic Railway

I think this picture sums up our mini-vacation perfectly...

Our train awaiting us

We are such awful parents. I mean, really. Someone should send us back to parenting school. Oh wait, there isn't such a place!

Anyway, we are such awful parents. I mean, what kind of parents would take their train-loving children on a train ride? The nerve of us. Trying to make our kids happy!

Sorry if I sound a little offended. I went to the trouble of locating this train ride in North Conway, New Hampshire, thinking that Josiah would enjoy a ride on a real train. We drove out of our way from Freeport, Maine to North Conway, even spent the night so that we could get up the next morning and ride this dang train.

And of course, both of the kids spent the majority of the ride crying or writhing in the anguished pain of HAVING TO SIT STILL. Oh, the humanity! The horrifyingly Victorian things that we expect of them! No modern toddler should have to sit still or enjoy himself!

Somehow every other child on board the train seemed to enjoy the ride. I guess their parents are "with it"...maybe they didn't sleep in on the day of "How to Make Your Toddler Happy 101" like Hans and I did.

Well, as Jan used to say: "I'll remember that"...

That top picture sums up the ride, doesn't it?

I think all of the photos are darling! I'm so happy you took this vacation and got to see so many lovely spots. Not to worry -- your kids are just normal. If I recall, Hans wasn't always an angel.

Hans STILL isn't always an angel...I'm surprised that he consented to let me take that picture at all!

The top picture reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting, for some reason. Perhaps I'm overeducated.
